BHS MTB has been participating The Colorado High School Cycling League’s virtual team challenges. The first two challenges took place with coaches leading kids through the challenges during practice. Admittedly, the first challenge could have been better organized. In the team’s defense, leadership had only recently confirmed the ability to practice at all with BVSD and was scrambling to manage basics.
The third of four team challenges and the upcoming challenge, Mountain Goat Madness, will also be led by coaches during normal practices from September 28th to October 4th. As before, the coaches will then submit the data from those rides or instruct riders to do so themselves.
Doing the challenge requires no action from families or riders at this time. Riders will be informed of leadership’s decisions and actions regarding this challenge.
Separately, The League is providing for an individual and optional virtual hillclimb challenge, the details of which are not yet posted. Stay tuned for more information to come from The League and, subsequently, BHS MTB.
Thanks to riders and families for their patience this year as the team does its best to comply with pandemic guidelines while getting kids on bikes.
Regarding Boulder County Public Health Order 2020-07 (here), BHS MTB may continue to operate based on the below language in the Frequently Asked Questions (FAQ) section of the associated order.
Q: I am 18 but still in high school. How does this affect me?
A: 18-year-olds who are currently students in a K-12 school (high school) may participate in activities sanctioned or sponsored by their K-12 school, including K-12 classes and K-12 sports. Students currently completing their K-12 education may participate in activities with their household.
Thanks to everyone for doing their part to keep kids on bikes in a compliant fashion.
Good luck to Madigan Munro and Bjorn Riley, both of them Panthers, at Worlds!

Cross Your Fingers And Let’s Ride!
We are finally getting ready to set out on our first practices of the season. We are excited to get going.
Please read on in order that student-riders are ready to ride.
Practice procedures must be followed and we may be monitored for compliance. If a rider does not comply, that rider will be sent home.
Lots of people have worked very hard to make BHS MTB a permissible activity during the pandemic. Let’s keep it that way.

Update on League Virtual Challenges
The Colorado League has delayed its virtual challenges. More and up-to-date information on League challenges can always be found here.
BHS Head Coaches and Team Director plan on issuing guidance for the challenges by Wednesday morning.
Uniform And Lifestyle Wear Pick-up
Lifestyle Wear or Team Kit products not claimed yet will be available to pick up at practice. Coach Jensen will be happy to help – he’s the guy guarding the big brown boxes. He will be available from roughly 4:30 – 6:45 this week (Tues/Wed/Thur) on the south side of the school before the entrance into Recht Field.
Peer Mentors Needed
There is ongoing exploration attempting to determine how best to provide peer mentor riders to riders with disabilities. This is a distinct opportunity to serve both the ethic of the team and others. Updates to come.
Coaches’ Statement
When Ben Boyer retired and no other faculty came forward or really even fit the position, Andy Jensen offered to serve as the required BVSD faculty liaison for the team. In a normal season, he could have delegated to the volunteers around him and simply ensured a reproduction of previous seasons.
The coaches and volunteers of the BHS MTB team commend Andy Jensen for persisting through more than a little difficulty on multiple levels over the past several months.

The sum of demands on the BHS MTB team’s ability to simply practice has been so great that it has not been possible yet to attend fully to planning any team activities around the League challenges.

Dear riders and families,
Last week the district announced that it was going to Phase 1 learning which means virtual learning for our students. The good news is that some sports will be able to continue with plans for practices pending approval of practice plans. The leadership team has been working for the last 2 months with the BHS Athletic Department and BVSD HR to create a plan that the high school and district will agree to. We have been given permission to ride in small groups. One of the obstacles to begin practice is that the district requires that we hire our volunteer coaches so they become assistant coaches working for BVSD. This will allow them to manage health screenings and be connected to BVSD liability protections. One more series of hoops to jump through before we are able to start. We are hoping, based on the District’s ability to hire coaches, to have some groups starting practice on the 17th. Some good news, we also clarified our permission to practice in compliant fashion on City managed lands.
So what does all of this mean for riders? First, we are still trying to make a season happen for our athletes. We feel strongly that students need an outlet for riding, seeing and interacting with small groups of people in the safest way possible, being part of a team that is doing everything they can to make this a season. Second, there are things you can do right now.
League Challenges Schedule can be found on the Colorado League website – Link:
We will only invite riders to begin practice through Team App. Students should all have an account set up. If you do not please contact Tabitha at help.boulderhighmtb@gmail.com.
Riders should have notifications set up on their phones so that you receive announcements when we send them. Availability will need to be set for each practice (event) that your rider is invited to. If you do not set your availability you cannot ride that day.
If you are opting to no longer be a part of the 2020 season please indicate so in the participation survey. Information about kits and lifestyle wear is a part of the survey.
Thank you for all of your patience. We are hoping to hit the trails as a team very soon.
Coach Andy
